Vehicle recalls are a relatively common occurrence across the globe and represent the auto industry’s commitment to protecting consumers. In fact, over 13 million vehicles worldwide were recalled in 2020 due to safety issues.

When an automaker or regulatory body issues a recall for your vehicle, it is to address defects or safety risks identified in your car.

If you own a Ford vehicle, it may be part of at least one of these recalls. In particular, the Ford Edge midsize sports utility vehicle (SUV) has had its share of issued safety recalls in the last few years.

So, what happens when your Ford Edge is part of the recall? How can you check if a specific model year is part of an ongoing recall?

Will there be any safety concerns associated with the recalled units? What actions is Ford taking to address these concerns?

This article aims to answer these questions and provide detailed information about the ongoing Ford Edge recalls. It highlights the causes of each recall, the components affected, and the proposed remedies of the automaker.

Are There Any Ford Edge Recalls?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 37 Ford Edge recalls have occurred as of February 2024.

Some issues that prompted these recalls were the following:

  • A headlight that might be too bright or aimed improperly
  • Faulty child seats
  • Seatbelt retractor assembly not functioning correctly upon activation
  • Airbag problems in specific models
  • Powertrain (a component comprising parts that move the vehicle) issues in specific models

What Year Was Bad for Ford Edge?

Ford Motor Company’s Edge SUV has faced numerous safety issues throughout the years. The following are four of the worst model years based on statistical data:

  • 2007 Ford Edge: If you had this model, you might have heard a roaring sound from the rear wheel. Faulty bearings caused this issue after the vehicle hit about 49,850 miles (mi) on average.

Another issue was the malfunctioning power transfer unit (PTU, a component that powers the wheels) after you’ve driven the vehicle for over 95,000mi.

  • 2008 Ford Edge: Similar to the previous model, this version suffered from multiple transmission-related problems. If you owned this vehicle, you might have experienced transmission failure and engine stalling issues.
  • 2013 Ford Edge: This model was notorious for having the most complaints and possibly the least reliable among all Ford Edge model years.

One common problem that owners of this model might have encountered was the door-ajar light, which stayed lit even after you locked the door.

Another issue was the model’s brakes, which could become unresponsive after driving the vehicle for 85,600mi.

Lastly, like the 2008 model, this vehicle’s engine could stall or shut down inadvertently while driving, putting you and your passengers at risk for accidents.

  • 2015 Ford Edge: One unusual issue with this model was the inexplicable cracking of the roof glass without any accompanying damage to the vehicle.

Additionally, if you have driven this specific model for over 13,800mi, it may become prone to complete electrical malfunction.

Ford Recalled Nearly 3 Million Cars and SUVs for Rollaway Risk

Ford issued a safety recall encompassing almost 3,000,000 vehicles, including specific units of the following models:

  • 2013 to 2021 Transit Connect vans
  • 2013 to 2019 Escape SUVs
  • 2013 to 2018 C-Max hybrids
  • 2013 to 2016 Fusion sedans
  • 2015 to 2018 Edge SUVs

The reason for this recall was the abovementioned vehicles’ potential rollaway risk. A rollaway happens when your vehicle moves without a driver.

The Details

A defective bushing caused the rollaway issue. This component, produced by automotive supplier Hi-Lex, would cause the vehicle’s transmission to fail to shift into “park” despite the car’s shifter indicating it is in “park.”

Ford couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause of this failure but informed the NHTSA that the defect might be due to exposure to humidity and heat.

Since 2018, Ford has recalled nearly four million vehicles equipped with this transmission bushing.

To help rectify this problem, Ford dealerships will replace your vehicle’s faulty shift bushing and include a protective cap at no additional cost.

Why Is Ford Discontinuing the Edge?

Ford officially declared that it wouldn’t include the Edge SUV in the manufacturer’s 2023 lineup.

If you’re a long-time fan of this vehicle, this news may surprise you, considering the Edge has been in production since 2006.

However, this decision to discontinue the Edge was due to Ford’s long-term vision of focusing its resources on producing electric vehicles (E.V.s).

Doing the Right Thing. It’s the Only Thing.

According to Ford’s website, the company promises safety, integrity, simplicity, and honesty with its recall system. Ford acknowledges the trust you put in its vehicles to carry you, your family, and your friends, which is why the car manufacturer takes recalls seriously.

Although Ford acknowledges that recent supply chain issues make it challenging to do repairs faster, it maintains an optimistic approach to its services.

NHTSA Safety Recall Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a free online lookup tool that helps determine recall results by letting you enter your vehicle’s model year or vehicle identification number (VIN).

This tool lets you check whether a vehicle model is yet to undergo repairs as part of a car manufacturer’s recall protocol.

Under federal law, you don’t have to pay for safety recall repairs for cars that are up to 15 years old. This period is based on when the car was sold to the first owner rather than the manufacturing date or model year.

Regarding the Edge’s recalls, the succeeding sections, categorized by model year, affected component, and announcement date, discuss the issues involving the affected vehicles and the corresponding fixes.
