Car manufacturers aim to use only the most advanced techniques, tools, and approaches to ensure top-notch service.
However, despite these efforts, the nature of manufacturing is that issues often become apparent after products are made, shipped, and sold. In such cases, manufacturers are sometimes left with no other option except to announce a safety recall.
Recalls occur when products deviate from established quality standards, posing health and safety risks.
If an automobile manufacturer identifies a safety-related problem in a particular model, they inform the car owners about the defect and typically provide free repairs to address the issue.
The Ford Motor Company is no stranger to such problems. In fact, Ford recently topped all of its fellow automakers in the number of recalls issued in the first half of 2023.
If you own a Ford, your car may be part of at least one of these recalls. In particular, the Ford Fusion mid-sized sedan has had its share of announced safety recalls in the last few years.
So what happens when your coveted four-door sedan is part of the recall? How will your dealer resolve the situation if your vehicle is recalled? Can you get a refund for a recall repair?
This article explains these problems and discusses previous Ford Fusion recalls. Moreover, this write-up gives valuable tips about what to do in case your Ford vehicle is affected by a recall.

Don’t Charge Ford Fusion Plug-in Hybrid EVs Until a Recall: Battery Energy Control Module Fails Cause Fire Hazard
Recently, Ford Motor Company recalled about 15,000 Ford Fusion PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) from the model years 2019 and 2020. The reason? The vehicle may not properly start, lose power, or risk catching fire during operation.
According to Ford, power loss is the most common customer complaint. Like all PHEVs, the Ford Fusion plug-in hybrid can be operated without charging, but it will consume more gasoline than if it had been plugged first.
Per the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) documents, Ford Motor Company had been aware of the 270 warranty claims and seven fire reports. However, no injuries or crashes related to the problem have been brought to their attention.
Ford advises against charging or plugging in your Fusion until they find a remedy.
The Details
The recalled vehicles are Ford Fusion plug-in hybrids manufactured from December 6, 2017, to July 27, 2020. The reference number for this recall is 23S33.
Ford suspects the problem occurs when the CID (current interrupt device) activates and delivers too much current through the BECM (battery energy control module). The driver may be prompted with a “stop safely now” message or experience a no-start condition.
Typically, CIDs cut off an electrical circuit when it detects a battery fault. However, as of January 2024, Ford still hasn’t determined why the device activates.

Ford Recalls 1.5 Million Vehicles With Brake Hoses and Windshield Wipers Problem
In March 2023, Ford Motor Company announced two recalls for approximately 1.5 million vehicles due to brake hose and windshield wiper problems.
The first recall affects 1.3 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKX SUVs (sports utility vehicles). The affected vehicle models use a front brake hose, which can burst and cause a brake fluid leak, compromising the driver’s ability to stop the vehicle in time.
As of March 2023, the automaker has received a report of one non-lethal accident related to the issue.
Meanwhile, the second recall relates to about 222,000 F-150s built in 2021. Ford noted that the windshield wipers on these vehicles can break.
To remedy the situation, Ford will replace the necessary parts for free.
Ford Also Recalls Trucks Over a Separate Issue
Aside from the massive front brake problems, Ford recalled certain F-150 pickup trucks for faulty windshield wipers.
According to the NHTSA, the windshield wiper motors may prematurely fail due to a faulty spline, which is particularly risky during a storm.
A telltale sign of this problem is one or both wipers moving erratically or slowly during operation.
Ford Motor Company is aware of the detached or inoperative wiper arms reports but confirms that no injuries or crashes are related to the issue.
Ford dealers will inspect and replace the windshield wipers for free to rectify the situation and reimburse those who already paid to repair their windshield wipers.
What to Do if You Might Be Affected
If you’re wondering whether your vehicle is affected by the brake hose recall, contact Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or your local dealership.
Additionally, you can use the NHTSA online search tool to see if a specific vehicle is under an active recall.
Some Recalls May Affect Your Ford Fusion
According to NHTSA, as of January 2024, there are 44 safety recalls for the Ford Fusion.

Ford Recall: Lever Does Not Shift to the Intended Gear Due to Worn Bushing
Ford announced a recall for some of their 2013 to 2016 Fusion, 2013 to 2018 C-Max, 2013 to 2019 Escape, 2015 to 2018 Edge, and 2013 to 2021 Transit Connect vehicles due to a bushing issue.
The shift cable bushing may detach or degrade, causing the shift lever position selector to malfunction. This can inadvertently result in the vehicle being in neutral gear, leading to a rollaway, or the vehicle may move or operate in an undesired direction.
As a recourse, Ford dealers will replace the worn underhood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing without any cost to the car owner. Ford’s reference number for this specific recall is 22S43.
Brake Pedal Bumper Corrodes and Separates From Brake Pedal
Ford issued a safety recall for some 2014 to 2015 Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 Mustang vehicles.
The affected vehicles are either originally sold or registered in the following states:
- Texas
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- Alabama
- Florida
- Georgia
- South Carolina
- North Carolina
- Virginia
- Hawaii
Exposure to environmental conditions, such as high humidity, high temperature, and salt air, can cause the brake pedal bumper to corrode or separate completely from the brake pedal.
A faulty brake pedal can make the brake lights illuminate continuously, causing confusion to other drivers and increasing the likelihood of a crash.
Meanwhile, for vehicles that use an automatic transmission, a missing brake pedal bumper may cause the driver to shift the car out of the “park” gear without depressing the brakes, causing a rollaway.
As a recourse, authorized Ford dealers will replace the brake pedal bumpers and clutch pedal bumpers (if equipped) free of charge.
If you own one of these recalled vehicles, the reference number for the recall is 22S02.
Driver-side Frontal Air Bag Inflator Ruptures During Deployment
Ford Motor Company recalled the following vehicle models due to an airbag issue:
- 2007 to 2011 Ranger
- 2006 to 2012 Fusion
- Lincoln Zephyr
- Lincoln MKZ
- 2006 to 2011 Mercury Milan
- 2007 to 2010 Edge
- Lincoln MKX
The frontal airbag inflator of the affected vehicles may rupture upon deployment due to propellant degradation, possibly causing metal debris to come through and injure the occupants.
Ford dealers will replace the driver-side frontal airbag or module to resolve the concern.
Owner notification letters were dispatched for this safety recall in April 2021 (passenger-side airbag issue) and November 2022 (driver-side airbag issue). If you want to inquire about this recall, the reference number is 21S12.
Ford Lincoln Recall: Doors Open While Driving
Ford recalled the following vehicle models due to door latch issues:
- 2011-2014 Fiesta
- 2013-2014 Fusion
- 2015 Mustang
- 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max
- 2012-2015 Focus
- 2014-2016 Transit Connect
- 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ
- 2015 MKC
This recall stems from an issue with the side doors containing defective latches. The doors may open while driving, or you may think they’re closed when they’re not.
The affected vehicles were already part of previously announced recalls, namely 15V-246, 16V-643, and 17V-210. However, the repairs for the previous recalls may not have been accomplished properly.
To address this issue, authorized Ford dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm the repair was done properly and replace the side door latches if necessary. This service is free of charge.
Alternatively, you can inspect your vehicle’s door latches and enter the date codes into an online directory to see if the latches are correct.
Ford Fusion Recalls by Year: Find Existing Ford Fusion Car Recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers a free search tool that lets you enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) to check whether a specific vehicle model has not yet undergone repairs as part of a safety recall protocol in the last 15 calendar years.
The manufacturers conducting the specific recall provide the recall data through NHTSA’s lookup tool. Note that the VIN search tool does not cover the following:
- Accomplished safety recall information
- International vehicles
- Manufacturer customer service
- Recently announced recalls
- Recalls conducted by small vehicle manufacturers, including specialty applications and some ultra-luxury brands
As per federal law, safety recall repairs are free of charge for cars up to 15 years old, calculated from the initial sale to the first owner, rather than relying on the model year or manufacturing date.
However, Ford has no expiration on their safety recalls and will provide the remedy for free if you bring the car to their authorized dealers.
The succeeding sections discuss the Ford Fusion recalls per year based on the federal safety regulator’s website. Unless stated otherwise, Ford dealers will remedy the issues tackled in the succeeding sections at no additional cost to the vehicle owners.

How Do I Know if My Ford Fusion Has a Recall?
To determine if your Ford Fusion is part of a previously announced recall, directly inquire with your local dealership or visit Ford’s official website.
Ford offers a comprehensive recall checker that lets you see whether your vehicle requires servicing as a recall remedy.
The recall checker is easy to use. Simply input your VIN (vehicle identification number) in the space provided, and the recall checker will show if your Ford vehicle is part of a recall.
How Do I Check My VIN for Recalls?
You can input your VIN into the NHTSA’s search engine to determine whether your Ford Fusion is subject to a previously declared recall.
The VIN, a 17-digit alphanumeric code, is located on the lower edge of your vehicle’s windshield on the driver’s side. Each segment of the VIN holds details about the vehicle, including its manufacturing location, date, and manufacturer information.
What Happens if My Ford Fusion Has an Open Recall?
Suppose your Ford Fusion is affected by an open recall. That means the manufacturer and the NHTSA have detected an issue with your car.
After verifying your vehicle through the VIN lookup, you must contact your local dealership to arrange the necessary repairs.
Typically, safety recalls are initiated when a problem with certain components poses a safety risk or fails to meet established safety standards. The manufacturer must address and rectify your vehicle’s issues in such cases.
If you own an affected vehicle, you will receive a notification letter outlining the details of the safety recall, including the nature of the defect, the availability of remedy parts, instructions for getting your vehicle repaired, and information about its safety in its current state.
Often, these repairs are carried out at no cost to you.
Remember that often, the manufacturer may not be aware if your vehicle is subject to an ongoing safety recall. Therefore, it’s advisable to regularly check with your dealer or the NHTSA website for the latest information.
How Long Does a Recall Take To Fix?
The time required to fix a safety recall usually depends on the repairs needed.
A straightforward task like a software update usually requires less than an hour, while more intricate mechanical repairs might extend over several days or weeks.
When scheduling a repair appointment, you must inquire with the dealership about the expected duration for your specific repair.
Here are other factors that may affect how long a recall-related repair may take to finish:
- The number of vehicles affected by the safety recall
- The complexity of the problem
- The number of parts involved in the repair procedure
- The availability of the repair parts
- The dealership technicians’ training to conduct the specific repair
- The number of recalled vehicles the dealership can repair each day (while also accounting for their daily service business)
Do You Need a Warranty for a Recall?
Your Ford Fusion does not need to be under an active warranty to be eligible for a recall-related repair.
The dealership addresses safety recalls for your Ford Fusion without any extra charges, irrespective of whether the warranty has lapsed or if you are not the vehicle’s original owner.
How Long Does a Recall Last on a Car?
A safety recall will not expire if the auto manufacturer remains in business or continues making replacement parts.
In general, recalls can be remedied for free up to 15 calendar years after your vehicle’s manufacture date.

Can I Get a Refund for a Recall Repair?
You may be eligible for a refund if you paid to resolve an issue later tied to a safety recall. Talk with your dealer to find out more.
Do Recalls Expire?
Emission, compliance, and safety recalls don’t have an expiry date. However, other customer satisfaction programs have mileage limitations and expiry dates.
Do You Provide a Rental Car for Recalls?
Ford will do its best to offer a comparable loaner vehicle as necessary. Check with your local dealer for more details and availability status.
How Will I Receive Recall Updates and Information?
Ford provides updates through their smart device app (FordPass), physical mail, and email. The Ford website is continually updated.
You can also subscribe to email alerts from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On the subscription page, enter your registered email address and select the make, model, and year of the vehicles you want to receive alerts for.
Where Do I Get Recall Repairs Done?
Feel free to bring your Ford vehicle to the nearby dealership for the necessary repairs. Many dealers provide the Ford Mobile Service, and they can conveniently conduct repairs at your residence, workplace, or nearby location.
A local dealer can retain your vehicle for a maximum of 30 days. If the recall-related repairs extend beyond this 30-day period, your vehicle might be considered a lemon.
According to state law, if your car meets the criteria for a lemon, you may be eligible for a replacement vehicle, compensation, or a refund.
