Drivers’ actions can sometimes result in accidents on the road. Behaviors such as erratic or drunk driving pose significant risks, but defective vehicles can also play a role in accidents.

Each year, manufacturers discover new vehicle defects, even in EVs (electric vehicles), prompting mandatory safety recalls. But what exactly is a safety recall? Simply put, a safety recall occurs when vehicles fail to meet established quality standards, thus posing risks to health and safety.

If an automobile manufacturer identifies a safety-related problem in a particular model, it informs the public about the defect and provides free repairs to address the issue.

In the past decade, nearly 300 million recalls have been announced by different automakers worldwide. Your car may be included in at least one of these recalls, specifically if you own or lease a Ford.

In such a case, you might wonder what to do if your Ford vehicle, mainly the Ford Focus, is part of a recently announced recall. How can you verify such information?

Do the affected models pose any safety risks? What actions is Ford taking to address these recalls?

Which Ford Models Are Being Recalled?

According to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the Ford F-150, Edge, Explorer, Fusion, Escape, and Mustang are among the Ford vehicles subject to a safety recall in recent years.

Approximately 2 million 2015 to 2018 Ford F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab faced a recall related to their seatbelt pre-tensioners, posing a fire risk.

Additionally, Ford Motor Company recalled around 350,000 2018 F-150, Expedition, and F-750 vehicles due to an unseated gear shift cable clip that could impact the correct securing of the gear shift.

A similar issue caused the safety recall of about 550,000 units of 2013 to 2016 Ford Fusion and 2013 to 2014 Escape models, where a bushing problem may cause the vehicle to move even though the transmission shows it is in park mode.

In 2016, a recall was issued for the 2017 Ford F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, and F-550 SD trucks due to concerns with the diesel fuel system. The issue centered around a protective shield on the fuel module that could become dislodged, increasing the chances of a fuel leak and potential fire hazard.

Specific 2016 to 2017 models of Ford Edge vehicles were also recalled due to their airbags not working as intended.

As for the Ford Focus model, the ongoing recalls will be discussed in the following sections of this article.

Are There Any Recalls on Your Ford Focus?

According to the NHTSA, there are 27 Ford Focus recalls as of January 2024.

You can visit the Ford website and use its search engine to see which Ford vehicle currently has a recall. You can search by VIN (vehicle identification number), year, or car model.

You can find the VIN on your vehicle registration document or on the lower left-hand side of your car’s dashboard.

Doing the Right Thing. It’s the Only Thing.

Ford Motor Company promises safety, integrity, and coherence with its recall system. Although recent issues with the supply chain make it challenging to get repairs done swiftly, Ford maintains an optimistic approach to its services.

Ford May Have Botched Another Recall, This Time With the 2012 to 2018 Ford Focus: Engine Stall Issues Cause Recall of 1.5 Million Vehicles

In 2018, Ford Motor Company issued a safety recall for some of its Focus vehicles. The recall is related to a possible issue that could cause engine stalling.

Recently, regulators looked into whether or not the said safety recall worked following multiple reports of persistent issues.

The safety recall involved the 2012 to 2018 Ford Focus vehicles with 2.0-liter GDI (gasoline direct injection) and 2L GTDI engines (gasoline turbocharged direct injection engines). The problem? The canister purge valve (CPV) may be stuck open, and the powertrain control module (PCM) software does not detect the error.

When that happens, a check engine indicator light may activate, the fuel gauge might start acting erroneously, or the car may experience a loss of motive power.

In worst-case scenarios, the improper air-fuel ratio in the vehicle’s vapor management system may cause the fuel tank to deform.

When it initially announced the recall, Ford Motor Company proposed a solution that involved programming the PCM to feature updated software and detect a CPV error.

However, the NHTSA recently issued a recall query since the agency has received multiple complaints alleging CPV malfunctions even in the remedied vehicles.

NHTSA Safety Recall Results

The NHTSA offers a free search tool that lets you enter your VIN to learn if a specific vehicle model has yet to undergo repairs as part of a safety recall protocol in the last 15 calendar years.

The manufacturers conducting the specific recall provide the recall data through NHTSA’s lookup tool. Note that the VIN search tool does not cover the following:

  • Accomplished safety recall information
  • International vehicles
  • Manufacturer customer service
  • Recently announced recalls
  • Recalls conducted by small vehicle manufacturers, including specialty applications and some ultra-luxury brands

As per federal law, safety recall repairs are free of charge for cars up to 15 years old, calculated from the initial sale to the first owner, rather than relying on the model year or manufacturing date.

However, Ford has no expiration on its safety recalls and will provide the remedy for free if you bring the car to authorized dealers.

The succeeding sections discuss the existing Ford Focus recalls per the federal safety regulator’s website. Unless stated otherwise, Ford dealers will remedy the issues tackled in the following sections at no additional cost to the vehicle owners.
