Product recalls occur all the time in our daily lives. Items found to be defective or harmful to consumers are pulled from the shelves so compensations can be made. But what happens when a vehicle is recalled?
Vehicle recalls are issued for different reasons. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) handles complaints as recalls occur.
If enough reports are filed against a manufacturer or an auto manufacturer seeks further exploration into a vehicle, the NHTSA will investigate the problem and assess whether or not a safety recall should be issued.
Sometimes, the NHTSA even forces a safety recall if necessary.
In 2022, the NHTSA said there were more than 900 safety recalls affecting more than 30 million vehicles in the United States. Your car may be included in at least one of these recalls, specifically if you own or lease a Ford.
In such a case, you might ask yourself what to do if your Ford vehicle, mainly the Ford Escape, is part of a recently announced recall.
This article discusses these problems and previous Ford Escape safety recalls. Moreover, this write-up gives tips about what to do in case your Ford vehicle is affected by a recall.

Recalls
Vehicle and equipment recalls are crucial to keeping you, the people around you, and the vehicles sharing the road with you safe. The NHTSA states that aside from the car, a safety recall can include installed vehicle components, such as tires, airbags, or even the car seat.
If there is a recall, vehicle manufacturers are legally obligated to file a report with the following information:
- Details of the affected vehicle or equipment
- Description of the vehicle defect or the noncompliance issue
- Factors that led to the recall decision
- Explanation of the suggested remedial process
- Schedule of the safety recall
Regular wear and tear issues are not covered under safety recalls. Generally, only defects that pose a safety concern are determining factors for establishing a recall. Some common faults that can trigger car recalls are the following:
- A leak in the fuel system
- Airbags that deploy inadvertently
- Wiring issues and other fire hazards
- Jacks that may collapse
- Malfunctioning accelerators and steering equipment
Why Is a Vehicle Recalled? Ford Recalls and Customer Satisfaction Programs
Recalls are caused by nonconformance to quality standards due to health and safety risks.
A vehicle recall occurs when a car manufacturer deems a specific model or make a safety-related hazard. The automaker often offers free repair services to remedy the issue that caused the recall.
If you want to know if your specific Ford vehicle is part of a previously announced safety recall, the best way is to check with your local dealership or visit Ford’s website.
Ford offers a recall checker that lets you see if your vehicle requires servicing as a remedy. Simply input your VIN (vehicle identification number) in the space provided, and the lookup tool will show if your vehicle is part of a recall.
Which Ford Models Are Being Recalled?
According to the NHTSA, the Ford F-150, Edge, Explorer, Fusion, Escape, and Mustang are among the Ford vehicles that have been subject to a safety recall in recent years.
Approximately 2 million Ford F-150 Regular and SuperCrew pickups faced a recall related to their seatbelt pre-tensioners, posing a fire risk.
Additionally, Ford Motor Company recalled around 350,000 F-150, Expedition, and F-750 vehicles due to an unseated gear shift cable clip that could impact the correct securing of the gear shift.
A similar issue caused the safety recall of about 550,000 Ford Fusion and Escape models, where a bushing problem may cause the vehicle to move even though the transmission shows it is in park mode.
In 2016, specific Ford trucks were also recalled because of a faulty diesel fuel system. The protective shield on the fuel module can dislodge and cause a leak.
Specific 2016 to 2017 models of Ford Edge vehicles were recalled due to their airbags not working as intended. As of 2018, this recall’s completion rate was 81.4%.
As for the Ford Escape model, the ongoing recalls will be discussed in the following sections of this article.
Ford Recalls Over 125,000 Vehicles, Including Select Escape, Maverick, and Corsair Models
According to a campaign published by the NHTSA, Ford recalled over 125,000 crossovers and pickup trucks that could catch fire during operation.
This recall expands the similar campaign issued on July 22, which covered approximately 100,000 Ford Maverick, Ford Escape, and Lincoln Corsair vehicles from 2020 to 2023. The affected vehicles are equipped with Ford’s 2.5L hybrid powertrain system.
According to the recall, in the event of an engine malfunction, the engine oil and fuel vapor can enter the compartment and accumulate near ignition sources, such as the exhaust, potentially starting a fire.
Ford Motor Company also said it is aware of three instances where these models caught fire even after undergoing the remedy procedure for the previous 2022 recall, suggesting that the original fix could not address the problem.
Ford advises owners of these affected vehicles to park and shut off the engine immediately if they hear unexpected noises, see smoke emanating, or notice a sudden loss of motive power.
If you think your Ford vehicle is affected by this safety recall, you can check through the NHTSA website.
Ford Escape SUVs and Super Duty Trucks Recalled to Fix Blank Screens
Recently, Ford Motor Company issued a safety recall for over 38,000 vehicles, particularly those with a digital dashboard.
The recall was instigated by an issue with the instrument panel, which may show a blank screen.
The display panel failing to show speed, mileage, and other important information could increase the likelihood of a crash.
Moreover, a faulty display panel means the vehicles do not meet federal motor vehicle safety requirements.
Ford Escape Recall Details
The vehicles recalled for the digital dashboard issue were the following:
- Ford Escape SUVs (sport utility vehicles) manufactured from November 15, 2022, to June 16, 2023
- Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks manufactured from January 19, 2023, to May 31, 2023
The reason for the recall? An improperly soldered joint causes the digital display panels to go blank.
To rectify the issue, Ford will replace the faulty instrument panels at no extra cost to the customers.

NHTSA Safety Recall Results
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers a free search tool that lets you enter your vehicle identification number (VIN). You can learn if a specific vehicle model has yet to undergo repairs as part of a safety recall protocol in the last 15 calendar years.
The manufacturers conducting the recall provide the data through NHTSA’s lookup tool. Note that the VIN search tool does not cover the following:
- Accomplished safety recall information
- International vehicles
- Manufacturer customer service
- Recently announced recalls
- Recalls conducted by small vehicle manufacturers, including specialty applications and some ultra-luxury brands
The succeeding sections discuss the existing Ford Escape recalls based on the federal safety regulator’s website.
Federal law mandates that all safety recall repairs on vehicles up to 15 years old be provided free of charge. However, Ford recalls don’t have an expiration. Hence, the automaker will apply the remedy at no cost to the car owner if you bring the vehicle to licensed dealers.

FAQs
1. Where can I find more information about the Takata airbag recall?
Ford has a website that addresses questions about Takata airbag inflator recalls. You can also enter your VIN on the website to find out if your specific vehicle has been recalled.
2. What do I do if I’ve gotten a recall notice?
Suppose your Ford Escape is affected by an open recall. In that case, it means that both the manufacturer and the NHTSA have identified an issue with your car. After checking your vehicle, you can contact your local dealership to schedule a repair.
Typically, your Ford Escape will be affected by a safety recall if it is determined that a problem with its components makes it a safety risk or fails to adhere to the laid-out safety standards. When this happens, the auto manufacturer is obligated to repair your vehicle.
If you own an affected vehicle, you will receive a letter explaining the specifics of the safety recall and how to resolve the defects promptly, often at no cost to you.
The letter will explain the exact defect that caused the recall, the availability of the remedy parts, how to get your vehicle repaired, and whether your car is safe to drive in its current state.
However, remember that in many cases, the manufacturer won’t know if you own a vehicle affected by an ongoing safety recall, so you should regularly check with your dealer or the NHTSA website.
3. How do I check for a recall on my car?
You can check if your 2017 Ford Escape is part of a previously announced recall by entering your VIN (vehicle identification number) into NHTSA’s search engine.
The VIN is a 17-digit alphanumeric code found on the bottom edge of your vehicle’s windshield on the driver’s side. Each segment of the VIN contains information about the car, such as where or when it was manufactured and by whom.
The VIN can also be used when you want to purchase a second-hand vehicle and obtain information about it.
4. Are recall repairs free?
Spare parts and repair services for safety recalls are free through a local Ford dealership.
5. Am I entitled to a refund for a repair call?
You may be eligible for a refund if you paid to resolve an issue later tied to a safety recall. Talk with your dealer to find out more.
6. Do recalls expire?
Emission, compliance, and safety recalls don’t have an expiry date. However, other customer satisfaction programs have mileage limitations and expiry dates.
7. Do you provide a rental car for recalls?
Ford will do its best to offer a comparable loaner vehicle as necessary. Check with your local dealer for more details and availability status.
8. How will I get recall information and updates?
Ford provides updates through its smart device app (FordPass), physical mail, and email. The Ford website is also constantly updated.
You can also subscribe to email alerts from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On the subscription page, enter your registered email address and select the make, model, and year of the vehicle for which you want to receive alerts.
9. Where do I get recall repairs done?
You can take your Ford vehicle to your local dealership for repairs. Some dealers offer the Ford Mobile Service and can perform repairs at your home, work, or any nearby location.
10. Who can I call with additional questions?
Contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 to discuss your queries and concerns with a Ford Service team member.
11. What if I receive recall notices for a vehicle I no longer own?
Visit the Ford support webpage to forward recall information to the right owner.
